Results of Radiotherapy in Soft Tissue Sarcoma

Abstract
49 patients with soft tissue sarcoma treated with radiotherapy at the department of radiation oncology, Kosin Medical Center between June, 1980 and December, 1986 were retrospectively analyed. Among 49 patients, 44 patients (89.8%) were treated
with
wide resection and postoperative radiotherapy with subsequent chemotherapy. 14 patients were treated by radiotherapy with 250-300cGy per fraction, 5 day a week, total doses of 5000-6000cGy(mean: 5750cGy), and 35 patients were treated with
180-200cGy per
fraction, total doses of 6000-7500cGy(mean: 7000cGy). Adjuvant chemotheray with DTIC, Vincristine and Doxorubicin was admonistered with 6-11 cycles(mean:8 cycles). The incidence of lymph
node metastases at the initial work up was 14.3%.
Overall 3 and 5 year survival rates were 57% and 51%. 5year survival rates by stage were 25% in stage I, 91% in II, 46% in III and 43% in IV. 5 year survival rates by fractional doses of radiation were equal (50% vs 51%). The prognostic factors
influencing survival and recurrent rates were tumor size, histologic type and anatomical site. however, the stage and grade did not show statistically different survival and recurrent rates. The recurrent rates were 30.6% in locoregional site and
40.8%
in distant metastases. The death rate was 49%(24 patients); among 24 patients, 7 patients(29%) have been died of locoregional failure, 7 patients(29%) of distant metastases and 10 patients(42%) of both.
In this study we found that conservative surgery and postoperative radiotherapy with subsequent chemotheapy might be exellent in treatment of soft tissue sarcoma.
